Helsinki Travel Guide

Helsinki is Finland's administrative center and the center of Finnish cultural life and business activity. There is a large and varied collection of museums, galleries, and performance spaces in the city. Many major company headquarters are in Helsinki.

About Helsinki

Helsinki covers an area of 72.2 sq. miles (187.1 square Km) and is estimated to have a population of 1.1 million people being the capital and the largest city of Finland. Founded in 1550, it has been the Finnish capital since 1812. It is one of the most beautiful and most visited scandinavian cities.

Kiasma - Museum of Contemporary Art

Kiasma - Museum of Contemporary ArtUnder the administration of the Finnish National Gallery, this is Helsinki’s most experimental major museum. An American architect, Steven Hall, designed the radically innovative building, every aspect of which was conceived for the display of art produced since the 1960s. The art that’s celebrated within this place might be either electronic or tangible, musical or performance oriented.

Exhibitions change frequently within an environment where the “permanent collection” occupies a smaller percentage of floor space than any other museum in Finland. The name of the museum (chiasma is defined in medical dictionaries as the crossing point of optic nerves) suggests Finland’s special ability to achieve crossovers between the worlds of fine art and high technology.
